Ashtanga Yoga evolved over thousands of years to address mental, physical, emotional as well as spiritual development. It is a rigorous practice containing a systemized set of postures or asanas designed to help practitioners achieve a state of yoga - the "yoking" of mind, body, and soul leading toward self-realization. Each asana is linked to one another through a vinyasa (a portion of the classic sun salutation) which creates a flowing practice, and heats the body.
The breath is central to the practice of Ashtanga. The physical and meditative aspects of the practice are achieved when the practitioner is able to synchronize breath with movement as well as with "dristis" (focus points). The breath is key to mind control for its calming, energizing as well as meditative qualities.
In the beginning, new students should practice at least 3 times a week to build core strength and learn the series. Given the complexity of the practice, one should not expect to understand all of its nuances quickly. It's a time for self-exploration, but we encourage you to ask questions of our instructors before or after class. To fully realize and enjoy the benefits of Ashtanga, students eventually incorporate the practice into their lives on a daily basis.
The Beginner class is a good place for new practitioners to begin their exploration of Ashtanga. The class is comprised of an abbreviated version of the classic series, and instructors talk students through every posture to ensure that everyone can follow along. The ½ Primary Series is geared toward students who are familiar with the sequence, and are looking to deepen their practice. The series contains seven more asanas, and instructors usually offer more hands-on adjustments with less verbal instruction. Students who have developed an understanding of the overall practice through the Beginner series are welcome to try ½ Primary classes at any time.
